MAY, 2012
MAY.
Last month I spent 2 weeks in London shooting for the D&AD awards which celebrates creative excellence in design and advertising. This year was the 50th anniversary of D&AD and they flew me out there to shoot 200 of the worlds most important creatives. In the coming weeks I'll be able to share the work created during that 4 day portrait fest.
The wave of new work portfolio creation continues. I had an opportunity to test a model near the end of my London trip, that shoot is in post production and will be live on my site next week. My hard copy portfolios are always going out, if you'd like to meet and see one or talk about having me on one of your projects, message me.
I've been updating my site like crazy since I've been back. This newsletter summary just touches on a few of the new shoots I've done since last month. Below I've included 2 videos you may have missed, a great profile shot of me by Cory VanderPloeg for our Agency site, and Beach, Martin Reader's beach volleyball inspiration helping him get to London for this summer's Olympic Games. All the rest is on my website. All stories link directly. Thanks for following along.
New work
SERAFIMA STILLS AND CINEMAGRAPHS
My creative with Serafima which I shot a few months ago has come out in Bambi Magazine. I can finally show you the full story here. I mixed stills and video, which I then turned into cinemagraphs. Enjoy.
LONDON BEATBOX CREW
I was hanging out with a few friends at Shoreditch House and after I left and walked towards the Underground, I saw this beatbox crew rocking out for almost 100 onlookers. I had to stop and shoot.
SATURDAYS MUSE PART II - nsfw CONTAINS NUDITY
Araina has modeled for my nude workshop a few times. I always get amazing stories with her. And they happen fast. Here is just one of my recent series with her, natural light, white sheer fabric and drama. Enjoy.
MORE HIGHLIGHTS
MIRIAN
Model / Photographer Mirian recently came by Hermann & Audrey to discuss modeling for me as well as to catch some quick advice on her fashion photography. After all that was done, I had to make my super close up natural light portrait of her. Her face and skin tone in this light is amazing. Share it if you enjoy it.
LONDON STREET STYLE
I paid "Sunshine" £5 to take his picture. He said, "I'm trying to make a living". He was selling a few random things on the street outside of Shoreditch House, across from Shoreditch Highstreet station. His style wasn't outer worldly, but I did like his vibe and husslin' attitude.
LONDON AT NIGHT VIA INSTAGRAM
We did indeed have some night time fun in London. Mixed drinks and mischief. I had my iPhone with me at all times, and I posted via instagram. Here are my favourite nightime London snaps. I was amazed at how well lit London is at night. All the streets, alley ways and pubs each tell a different story.
Highlights from the D&Ad judging
Highlights from my week of shooting at the D&AD judging. It was held at Olympia, a 157 000 square foot, natural light old world building. What an amazing venue to hold the D&AD juding. I shot all my portraits natural light. These instagrams are all iPhone 4.
NEW VIDEO WORK
featured video: CARTY PROFILE
Our amazing in house Cinematographer and Photographer, Cory VanderPloeg shot 8 one minute clips of all the players at Hermann & Audrey. Here's mine.
FEATURED VIDEO: BEACH
Olympic Beach Volleyball player, Martin Reader in his element, on the beach. Here he trains for the upcoming 2012 Olympic games. One of my favourite pieces.
upcoming Workshops
TORONTO ISLAND SERIES – INTRO TO DSLR - saturday may 26th
The first step to shooting great pictures is having an understanding of the camera. If you think of the camera like a human eye, the lens, iris and retina are exactly the same as the camera lens, aperture and the light sensitive area to record what is taking place, whether it be film or digital. This introduction workshop helps those film shooters transition to digital, and gives the digital photo enthusiast all of the necessary tools with which to create better images. This photo workshop is a location workshop that takes place on Toronto Island. You will need to arrive at the Toronto Island Ferry Docks at 10am to board the 10:15 Ferry to Wards Island.
ADVANCED LIGHTING WORKSHOP - Saturday June 23rd
This workshop will cover shooting portraits or models in studio for portfolio or assignment photography. Participants will have the opportunity to have their work critiqued by an industry professional as well have questions answered. This course is an advanced hands on opportunity to use professional studio lighting, reflectors and grip equipment. Students are required to bring camera, portable flash, lightmeter and laptop if applicable. Studio flash is provided, some portable flashes are available for Canon cameras, but if you have a piece of equipment that you'd like to learn how to use better, bring it along.
